Check out the E111 forms and the NEW European Health Insurance Card being introduced shortly. ![]() Hospital Treatment & Ambulance CostsIf you're treated in an emergency, as an in-patient or outpatient, in the Accident & Emergency Department of a Government Hospital there's no charge. Any medication you're prescribed during in-patient treatment, or for the first three days after you've been discharged is free but you'll be charged in full for anything exceeding this time period. You'll also be charged for any prosthesis you're prescribed. These charges aren't refundable. ![]() You won't be charged for transportation by ambulance in an emergency - as long as you can prove you're entitled to treatment. Where to Get RefundsIf you can't provide proof of your entitlement to treatment, you'll be charged in full and should apply for a refund on your return to the UK. Claiming refundsYou can claim any refunds you're entitled by applying either in person or by post to the relevant authority in the country you're visiting while you're there. You must enclose the original documents. If you leave your claim until you return to the UK, you should write to or telephone the following section and ask for claim form POD 1679: The Department for Work & PensionsThe Pension Service,International Pension Centre,![]() Monday to Friday 08.00-20.00. They'll liaise with the authorities of the other country on your behalf. Send your E111, original bills, prescriptions and receipts. If possible, keep copies for yourself.
