In an emergency, UK nationals need to present their passports to get treatment. All other nationals legally resident in the UK need to present both their Form E111 and their passport.

Doctors, Dentists & Prescriptions

  • Emergency medical treatment is available free from doctors in Government Health Centres.
  • Acute emergency dental treatment is provided free of charge in hospital out-patient wards or Government Health Centres, but isn't widely available. Most dental care is paid for privately.
  • A prescription from a licensed medical practitioner is needed to get medication. Any charge paid isn't refundable.

Hospital Treatment & Ambulance Costs

If you're treated in an emergency, as an in-patient or outpatient, in the Accident & Emergency Department of a Government Hospital there's no charge.

Any medication you're prescribed during in-patient treatment, or for the first three days after you've been discharged is free but you'll be charged in full for anything exceeding this time period.

You'll also be charged for any prosthesis you're prescribed. These charges aren't refundable.

Over 65s travel insurance

You won't be charged for transportation by ambulance in an emergency - as long as you can prove you're entitled to treatment.

Where to Get Refunds

If you can't provide proof of your entitlement to treatment, you'll be charged in full and should apply for a refund on your return to the UK.

Claiming refunds

You can claim any refunds you're entitled by applying either in person or by post to the relevant authority in the country you're visiting while you're there. You must enclose the original documents.

If you leave your claim until you return to the UK, you should write to or telephone the following section and ask for claim form POD 1679:

The Department for Work & Pensions
The Pension Service,
International Pension Centre,

Medical Benefits Section,
Tyneview Park,
Whitley Road,
Newcastle-upon-Tyne
NE98 1BA.
Tel: 0191 218 7547,

Monday to Friday 08.00-20.00.

They'll liaise with the authorities of the other country on your behalf.

Send your E111, original bills, prescriptions and receipts. If possible, keep copies for yourself.

The costs will not be refunded from NHS funds and you may face long delays whilst the foreign authority responds. Payment for any treatment received privately isn't refundable.
