Which travel insurance do I need:

There are 3 main types based on the duration of your stay.

Single Trip

Single trip cover covers the specified trip duration. Probably cheapest if you're only going abroad just once a year

If you're planning on taking several trips in a year your insurance could cost you less and save you time and hassle. A maximum per trip duration is normal of 50, 60 and up to 100 days.

Policy details vary by provider, this is a summary of typical risks covered on a single-trip, long stay or multi-trip policy.

  • Cancellation, curtailment and trip interruption:-
    • Death, illness, disease, injury or pregnancy complications of you, a co-traveller, destination host, close relative or business associate
    • Compulsory quarantine, jury service, witness duties
    • Natural disaster and prohibited travel to, or recommended evacuation due to: earthquake, fire, tsunami, landslide, flood, hurricane or epidemic / pandemic
    • Police / authorities requested you to stay at / return to your home address due to serious damage
    • Unexpected redundancy
  • Emergency medical and repatriation Following an "incident" causing bodily injury, illness, disease, quarantine, cover, for a time period (£x) expenses for:
    • Emergency medical, surgical, hospital, ambulance and nursing fees and charges abroad
    • Emergency dental treatment
    • Repatriation on medical grounds or death; or funeral abroad
    • Transport and/or accommodation expenses if delayed on medical grounds (and for a necessary assistant)
  • Baggage
    • Accidental loss or theft of, or damage to: baggage, articles and valuables
    • Emergency replacement: clothing, medication and toiletries (temporary or permanent)
  • Personal money - accidental loss of, theft of, or damage to
  • Computer equipment owned by you - accidental loss of, theft of or damage to
  • Personal liability - compensation, legal costs and expenses for
    • liability for bodily injury, death, illness or disease
    • Loss of or damage to property
  • Delayed departure - if travel is delayed by strike, industrial action, adverse weather or breakdown. An amount per period up to a maximum.
  • Missed departure (home or destination) - Due to public transport failure; accident or breakdown of your vehicle or a vehicle ahead, strike, industrial action or adverse weather. Reasonable additional accommodation & travel expenses covered.
  • Missed connection departure or return - costs because of public transport problems, or private vehicle breakdown or accident
  • Hijack/Kidnap - of plain or ship there is a payment for the delay
  • Legal expenses - legal costs (to a set value) to pursue a civil action for compensation against someone who caused you bodily injury, illness or death
  • Extended kennel / cattery fees - if delayed for medical reasons
  • Winter sports optional additional cover
