The Halifax (former Building Society now HBOS) earned a 5-star rating for its Single trip and Multi-Trip travel insurance policies from financial product services analysts Defacto in June 2004.

The main types of travel insurance cover on offer are -

The World Explorer Travel Insurance deal provides cover for up to 365 days for people aged between 16 - 40.

You're covered for -

• Up to £10 million of medical expenses cover
• 24-hour emergency assistance

Plus there are optional upgrades for winter sports and golf cover.

For an extra premium winter sports provides cover up to a max of 24 days in total, if you have Multi-Trip insurance cover.

There's also a discount for personal belongings covered under a home insurance policy.

Hazardous Pursuits

Halifax provide cover for most hazardous activities provided the activity is not the main purpose of the trip. The following activities they say are not covered:

• Flying of any kind other than as a fare-paying passenger
• Driving a car, van or lorry or similar form or motorised transport unless you have the appropriate licence to do so
• The use of motorcycles or mopeds, unless you are wearing a crash helmet and the person in control of the motorcycle or moped is in possession of a valid full motorcycle driving licence permitting the riding of that class of motorcycle or moped, and the motorcycle or moped has an engine capacity of 125cc or less
• Hang gliding, parachuting, sky diving or sky surfing
• Motor racing, motorcycle racing or sidecar racing
• Bullfighting
• Potholing or caving
• Mountaineering, cliff or rock climbing using ropes or guides
• Horse racing, eventing, hunting on horseback, polo, show jumping, endurance riding or rodeo
• Boxing, wrestling or martial arts
• Racing in motor boats
• High diving
• Scuba diving unless you are a qualified diver or a qualified instructor accompanies you, no cover applies for a depth greater than 30 metres or if you dive unaccompanied
• Yacht racing or ocean going racing
• Ski racing, ski jumping, off piste skiing unless accompanied by a qualified guide or instructor,heliskiing, ice hockey, bobsleighing, the use of skeletons, toboggans or luges, freestyle skiing, competitive skiing
• Any sport as a professional
