Over 800 companies have the green light either from the UK or another European Economic Area member to sell you insurance.

Of these, just under 600 carry out general insurance only e.g. car, home, travel and commercial; 160 specialise in long-term business only (such as life insurance and pensions) and 54 can do either.

Of the 600 in general insurance, just 10 companies mop up a massive 87% of the motor business -
