Single Trip Definition

Typically your travel and holiday period is covered plus certain cancellation risks and it terminates on completion.

Depending on the policy some automatically extend cover if delays extend your stay, but not all do so check the details.

How Long is a Trip

Up to 100 days is usual, even for those aged over 65. If you are aged 76+ then in some instances duration falls to 31 days. Not so good if you want to visit Australia.

For trips longer than these you may need a long stay policy, up to approx. 18 months, depending on age and destination.

Single Trip Insurance Cover

If you are going abroad the government recommends you take out insurance. Most travel policies cover the following:

  • Redundancy
• Emergency medical & repatriation Following an "incident" causing bodily injury, illness, disease, quarantine, cover, for a time period (£x) expenses for:
  • Emergency medical, surgical, hospital, ambulance and nursing fees and charges abroad
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • Repatriation on medical grounds or death; or funeral abroad
  • Transport and/or accommodation expenses if delayed on medical grounds (and for a necessary assistant)
• Baggage
  • Accidental loss of, theft of or damage to baggage, articles and valuables
  • Emergency replacement of clothing, medication and toiletries (temporary or permanent)
• Personal money - accidental loss of, theft of, or damage to
• Personal liability - compensation, legal costs and expenses for
  • liability for bodily injury, death, illness or disease
  • Loss of or damage to property
• Delayed departure - if travel is delayed by strike, industrial action, adverse weather and breakdown. So much per period up to a maximum.

• Hijack/Kidnap - of plane or ship there is a payment for the delay
• Legal expenses - legal costs (to a set value) to pursue a civil action for compensation against someone who caused you bodily injury, illness or death
• Extended kennel / cattery fees - if delayed for medical reasons
• Winter sports
